The File and Commentary Exchange Tool was developed to complement the Carolina Computing Initiative, a laptop requirement at UNC, Chapel Hill. FACET was installed on student laptops, linked with a server, and then coordinated the sharing of paper drafts and peer reviews. Some highlights:
| Facet had the ability to manage and share multiple file formats on a shared server. In addition to providing a versioning and tracking mechanism for files, the program enabled users in groups to exchange messages. |
| Facet was built to support flexible working groups. In addition to enabling sharing of multiple papers among members of a group for peer review, the program facilitated collaboraion on documents by allowing check out of single files. |
| Facet relied on helper applications to facilitate peer reviewing. The project made heavy use of commenting and tracking features of word processors, using the file management of FACET to handle the versioning of drafts, reviews with comments, revisions with changes, and final versions of documents. |
